Retail.PGH.001 Employment and Wages

Context

Introduction

The Bureau of Labor Statistics runs the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages program, which collects and publishes statistics on the number of jobs, average weekly wages, and total wages aggregated by granular industry type, U.S. county, category of owner, and size of business by employee headcount. ((Some options for the narrative: Which industries are seeing a pattern of sustained growth in number of employees and average wages over the last five years? For those in the industry, this analysis could help them keep salaries competitive in the interest of employee retention. For those in local government, these trends could help them decide which industries to bring to their area to boost employment. Picking a given industry and looking at where the growth is strongest could help a job seeker decide where to move to.))

Codebook

The NAICS industry_code codebook is here: https://www.bls.gov/cew/classifications/industry/industry-titles.htm The NAICS code categorizes business hierarchically. For instance all retail businesses have a code that starts with either 44 or 45. 441 codes for “Motor vehicle and parts dealers", 4411 codes for "Automobile dealers", and 44112 codes for "Used car dealers". own_code indicates whether the establishments are owned privately or by government (with separate codes for federal, state, local, and international goverments). The ownership codebok is at https://www.bls.gov/cew/classifications/ownerships/ownership-titles.htm area_fips designates a geographical area, as described in this codebook: https://www.bls.gov/cew/classifications/areas/qcew-area-titles.htm For instance, anything that starts with ‘42’ is in Pennsylvania, and '42003' represents Allegheny County. The size of the business (not in the linked dataset, but available in alternate forms of the QCEW data, such as from the Open Data Access page: https://www.bls.gov/cew/additional-resources/open-data/home.htm), is coded according to this codebook: https://www.bls.gov/cew/classifications/size/size-titles.htm
